Link building is probably the best way to increase your search engine rank (seo) without having to have much experience in internet marketing or web design, and its free too! You need to define your niche and stay within that. For example you would have 2 parts, one being your region and the second being your service. So it would be something like “Boston” and “Real Estate Agent”. You want to find the sites that rank high for “boston” in google, try to get links to your site from those high ranking sites. Then do this for “real estate” and if possibly try getting links from sites that rank high in “boston real estate agent” (this may not be possible since they may be your competitor). This is called link relevancy, you want sites linking to you that have similar content.

An effective technique to get people to link back to you, is to start a links page on your website. When you find a site you want your link on, add their link to your links page. Then send them a personal email with at least one compliment about their site and tell them how you enjoyed reading one of their articles or pages. Tell them you enjoyed it so much that you added a link to their site on your site. Near the end of the email ask them if they could link to you too! When you give people something (a compliment and a link) they will naturally want to return the favor!

Be sure to label your link properly. Instead of asking, can you add my link:

My long company name – my name
www.mysite.com

Instead ask them to link to:

Keyword 1 – Keyword 2
www.mysite.com

Most of the time they will link to your site the way you give them your link. Search engines use the text in links as a way to figure out how to rank your site for certain keywords.

Remember that all of this can seem slow and tedious, but over time you will notice a difference. Set a goal of trying to get 5 new links a week to your site!
